Bighorn Horseback Adventures are based about 90 minutes north west of Calgary in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
They will offer eight set departures during the summer of six nights duration commencing on Sundays and finishing on Saturdays. They have two mountain camps located in the Rockies and offer challenging riding trips into the mountains. The Base Camp has hard sided tents with wooden floors, comfy beds with mattresses, a cosy cook tent and hot showers. It is recommended for riders of 16 and over as you will spend between 4 and 5 hours a day in the saddle so some riding experience is needed. The second camp is higher up in the mountain and known as the Adventure Camp. It takes a six hour ride from Base Camp to get there but the location is well worth the trip as the views will be breathtaking. Heated tents are set up here with carpets rather than wooden floors but still a comfortable experience. All accommodation is out in the mountains. Capacity 8. Open June – Sept 2008

Base Camp
The Base Camp sits along the Cutoff Creek which flows
into the Clearwater River. After meeting your hosts in the small town of
Caroline we will head towards the Rockie foothills to reach our Base camp after
about a two hours drive. After getting settled into our cosy sleeping tents,
which have a wood floor, wood stoves and a bed with matress, we enjoy a great
dinner. The next day you have a lunch-picnic and head out on our horses, mostly
quarter-mix. The Base Camp experience is an adventurous riding opportunity which
brings you closer to the horses and riding. The trails lead us through forests,
flowery meadows, we are crossing clear streams and watching the wild horses.
Most evenings are spent around the campfire, enjoying roasted marshmallows and
good stories, until the whispering Cutoff Creek sends us to a good nights sleep
dreaming about the excitment of the next day ride!
Adventure Camp. This camp is ideal for those who want more outdoor riding adventure. First night in Base Camp. The next morning saddle the riding horses, load up the covered wagon, hitch up the draft horses 'Mac' and 'Rocket' and set out for a five hour ride further into the canadian rockies. The 'Adventure Camp' is located on a cliff above the Clearwater river surrounded by untouched wilderness, where human beings still play second fiddle. The 'Adventure Camp' facilities are similar to the Base Camp. There is a cook tent with wood stove, a shower tent and as a special feature our TIPI-firetent. The only difference is the sleeping tents have outdoors carpeting instead of wood floors. The trails lead us high up the mountains on 'Forty-Mile Ridge' or 'Hat Brim', to the breathtaking glacier-'Lost Guide Lake', to the border of Banff National Park and to a lot more spectacular places where we can get a glimpse of a wolf, follow bear-tracks and more... If you are willing to experience more adventure in your riding, the 'Adventure Camp' is a must see and do experience!
