We have first-hand knowledge from our many ranch visits, so please contact us with any questions or for a ranch holiday to suit you.

The ranch is set in the north east corner of Colorado on the rolling grassland which we would call Prairies. The history of the ranch goes back to the end of the 1800s when small acreages were farmed by immigrants from back east. It took a while for them to realise that ranching was a better option.

The North American prairies are part of the temperate grasslands known by ecologists as biomes. These regions receive moderate rainfall and are a composition of grasses, herbs and shrubs, rather than trees, as the dominant vegetation type. This area is part of what we would call The Great Plains. It is a rolling landscape with no huge changes in altitude until you reach the Rocky Mountain to the west.

The ranch now has a herd of 800 cows and calves plus assorted bulls. It's operated as a Working Ranch and activities happen around the seasons.

Accommodation is either in newly constructed log cabin rooms which are designed for singles and friends traveling together and have two comfortably sized individual beds. The bunkhouse has been refitted and modernized with five private bedrooms designed for couples. Each bunkhouse room has e a private bathroom, one queen size bed and a private entrance.

Both the bunkhouse and cabin rooms share excellent views of the meadow where the sunrise greets guests every morning.

Make sure to bring your appetite because three home cooked meals are served each day and snacks are available as desired to keep you full and energized. You can sit down and dig in to a real ranch meal three times a day.

Breakfast meal choices range from eggs, bacon and sausage or cold and hot cereal, fruit, yogurt; occasionally biscuits and gravy or breakfast burritos are also served.

Lunch is normally served in the dining room unless we are out on the trail or at a neighbour’s for the day. Sandwiches and soups, fruit, bread and salad are typical lunch meals. Lunch on the trail is a brown bag containing sandwiches, fruit, crisps and a dessert.

The evening meal is served in the dining room nightly. Margarita night is on Tuesday evening where the 'all you can drink' Margaritas are on the house. Other evening meals may include BBQ ribs, chicken, buffalo, beef or pork served with appropriate side dishes, bread, salad and dessert. Vegetarian and other special diets are happily catered to with advance notice.

There is a bar offering beer, wine and spirts for sale so no need to take your own.

The ranch also owns about 70-75 well-bred and highly trained quarter type horses, most are registered with the AQHA.

Each horse is selected for it quality breeding, great training and sensible attitude. They are trained for guests to rope on, work cattle and carry you through the daily ranch routine.

For beginners there are quieter mounts while others are more highly strung for experienced guests. The riding stock is trained to be responsive to neck reining and are used to working cattle.

Fulfil your cowboy fantasy and experience ranch life much like you will have seen in the western movies, at this ranch, they live the genuine cowboy life. During these Cowboy Adventure weeks you can ride the range all day then grab a cold one, relax and swap Wild West stories with the other cowboys.

Horses are available for you to ride over varying terrain at all speeds doing real cowboy work.  Please note that riding is only available from Monday to Friday.

So that the grazing stays sweet, you will be moving cattle, gathering bulls, checking water, putting out salt licks and checking fences, looking for strays and fence jumpers then driving them back where they belong. Remember, as a working ranch, cattle drives occur each week, all season long.

The activities of this ranch are based around the seasons, they are open May to October and this is what you would expect to be doing

Springtime is May and June:
You would be branding as well as gathering, sorting and moving the cow and calf pairs to their  summer pastures. Additionally fences must be checked for broken or damaged areas. They will have short single day cattle drives each week until all the cattle are settled for the summer. Spring activities can be hard to schedule; weather, sickness, calving and feeding all play a part in the daily work.

Summertime is July to early September : If you wish there is overnight camping, one night during the week at $50.00 per person.

Autumn is September and October:
Gathering and sorting, vaccinating and weaning the calves. Once again short half or one day cattle drives occur several times a week as they ship cattle to winter feed yards, etc. The work never ends!

Monday through Friday, after the day's cattle work is done and before supper, they offer an extra three hours of horseback riding. This is an opportunity for guests to further their riding education by participating in 'Cowboy School' - lessons in things cowboys do for fun! Roping is always a popular activity.

Happy hour starts after the horses are fed and settled for the night at 6:00 PM on the patio and dinner is served shortly afterward. They have a liquor license and a stocked bar so no need to take your own.

There is also a heated indoor swimming pool and a hot tub.

Tell Us What You Think

I visited Colorado Cattle Company and Guest Ranch in August 2014. It was my ninth ranch holiday and for me it was the ultimate ranch experience. I travelled by myself and was a bit apprehensive as previously I'd travelled to the US with my partner and children. However, I needn't have worried as the staff at this ranch are really friendly and I soon felt as though I was part of the family. If you go to this ranch you must get up early to watch the horses come galloping over the hill when they gather them early in the morning – a truly amazing sight! They are an exceptional herd of horses. I rode four different horses during the week and it was hard to pick a favourite as they were all so beautiful, well-mannered and responsive. I experienced roping, barrel racing, team penning and cutting as well as driving cattle and playing games on horseback. I'd tried roping at a previous ranch but was no good at it. However, under the wrangler's patient instruction I managed to rope the mechanical calf from horseback several times! This ranch has excellent facilities including an indoor arena, a swimming pool and a hot tub for easing aching muscles at the end of the day. Tom and Darcy are wonderful hosts and it is very apparent that they have a great love for all their animals. There is no nose-to-tail riding at this ranch and it is great to be able to ride where you want and not have to follow the horse in front! I highly recommend this ranch and can't wait to return!

A stunning location for an amazing trip! Everything worked seamlessly from start to finish. We had six days of new experiences both on and off horseback. From looking after your ‘own’ horse for the stay to roping steer, team penning, cutting, trail riding, checking cattle – You name it, we did it! I can’t praise the expertise of the Wranglers enough. They ensured that everyone rode at the level at which they felt comfortable but that no one missed out on anything they wanted to do. We were cared for in magnificent style by a wonderful group of ever-smiling family & staff and treated to plentiful, fresh and wholesome meals at very frequent intervals. We stayed in one of the rooms in the original Bunkhouse, full of rustic charm but providing every modern convenience and an enviable view of the beautiful sunrises. The pool was in a separate building and comfortably furnished for lounging. Sauna & Hot tub another distraction! I was truly sorry to leave and would go back without any hesitation. This is a very special place run by dedicated, caring people, providing a holiday to talk about for years to come.
